What is PCYC
Established in Western Australia in 1941, The Federation of Western Australian Police and Community Youth Centres (PCYC) is a not-for-profit organisation that creates opportunities for young people in the community through the delivery of recreational and educational activities and programs. We operate in excess of 50 PCYC and Blue Light Centres throughout metropolitan and regional Western Australia, as well as two camp facilities.
PCYC, recognising the need to ‘go mobile’ in order to offer services to those individuals and communities that may not have access to a current PCYC facility, has developed livALIVETM. livALIVETM is an innovative and dynamic mobile outreach service, operating in partnership with local government, schools, social agencies and community groups to provide activities, programs and youth spaces to meet the wants and needs of young people at a local level. livALIVETM uses a mobile van filled with equipment to support the above activities, as well as resources on offer in the regions in which it operates.
PCYC is different to other organisations delivering youth services because of our relationship with the Western Australia Police. Police Officers work with PCYC to help deliver life-changing programs targeted at young offenders and youth-at-risk, which plays a significant role in youth crime prevention. Through the provision of life skills, intensive mentoring, diversionary programs and training we focus on ‘breaking the cycle’, to prepare those identified young people for gainful employment or re-entry into traditional education.
Getting Young People Active
Keeping young people entertained these days can be expensive. PCYC is a community organisation committed to offering a wide variety of activities for young people at affordable prices.
Whether it is participating in sports such as basketball, gymnastics, boxing and martial arts or activities like dance, art and music, there is something for everyone at PCYC.
Protecting Young People
In relation to violence in the community, young people are much more often a victim of crime than the offender, so it’s important for all youth to have a safe place to go. PCYC centres provide safe environments for young people to hang out, get involved and be themselves.
When it comes to youth in trouble with the law PCYC helps young people turn their lives around, whether it be getting them back into school, setting them up for the workforce or providing someone to listen and offer guidance and support.
Developing Young Leaders
Not everyone is born a leader, but everyone can learn how. PCYC offers activities and programs that teach leadership skills and encourage teamwork. Police Rangers is one such activity, specifically designed to increase a young person's self confidence, leadership ability, team building skills and self esteem.
