Broome PCYC had an extremely busy few weeks over the July School Holiday period, seeing local young people participate in various programs.
Week 1: Cultural Youth Leadership Camp
Week one of the holidays saw Broome PCYC take participants out on a Cultural Youth Leadership Camp at the Gambanon Bush Camp on the Dampier Peninsula, hosted by Garnduwa. 20 young Indigenous leaders came to the camp from Broome, Beagle Bay, One Arm Point and Djarindijin communities.
The young leaders participated in 3 days of various educational, cultural and team building activities that were presented by a range of youth services as well as the local traditional owners of the area, the Bardi people.
The kids had a great time and learnt a lot over the three days which they can now take back to their communities and put the new skills they have learnt into practice. Thank you to Garnduwa for giving our participants the opportunity to attend the 2017 Cultural Youth Leadership Camp.
Week 2: PCYC Street Art Project
Broome PCYC were lucky enough to receive a grant from the Community Arts Network WA to develop and design a Street Art Mural at PCYC Broome.
Local organisations Red Cross, Broome Youth and Families Hub, Nyamba Buru Yawuru, Kimberley Population Health Unit, Wirrpanda Foundation, and the Broome Police worked alongside Professional Perth Artist George Domahidy and up to 300 local Broome young people to design a mural for the PCYC Stadium.
The first two days saw the young people design drawings and planning around the theme of ‘Building resilience’ and ‘Our Kimberley Lifestyle’. Broome Police spoke to the kids about the difference with ‘Professional Graffiti and Street Graffiti’ and the importance of respecting others property.
The remainder of the week, saw the programs youth and the community members put all the hard working designs into place.
PCYC Centre Manager, Annie Dann was extremely pleased with everyone’s contribution to the mural “it really was a team effort and something the kids can be proud of for many years to come”
PCYC would like to thank all those organisations that assisted with our holiday program and in particular Leah Rakabundel from Red Cross and Jenna Cowie from Kimberley Population Health Unit, for assisting with souring the funding.
We look forward to our next Street Art Project that will be happening during the October school holidays.
