Youth from Kensington Police and Community Youth Centres (PCYC) have had the exciting opportunity to be involved in an Urban Art ‘Mega Mural’ in collaboration with the Public Transport Authority’s Right Track Program.
The Mural is located on a 500 metre retaining wall, in Bayswater as part of the Forrestfield-Airport Link project which will connect Perth’s eastern suburbs to the rail network, and will feature artwork inspired by aboriginal seasons.
The Urban Art Project aims to help engage potential graffiti offenders or at-risk youth in art and help give a sense of ownership while and make a lasting contribution to their community.
Six young people from the Kensington PCYC Goals4Life Certificate I in Leadership Program worked together alongside recognised Urban Artist Drew Straker over a two day period to help paint the backdrop for the mural, and experiment with spray painting techniques on art boards.
“The project has been a fantastic opportunity to engage youth with art, and has really resonated with the young people involved” said Kensington PCYC Trainer, Frances Burns.
If you’d like to learn more about the project or the Kensington PCYC Goals4Life Certificate I in Leadership Program, please contact the centre today on (08) 9367 1282 or email kensingtonpcyc@wapcyc.com.au.
