Community Garden grows in Broome

Published: May 30, 2019 12:00am

Supported by the Kimberley Community Grants Scheme, a partnership between the Water Corporation and the Lions Club of Broome, Broome PCYC will work with at risk youth to build and maintain an edible and water wise garden as part of its youth support program.

The Broome PCYC Community Garden project aims to encourage youth at risk aged 15 – 20 years old to actively participate in sustainable living practices. Participants will establish and maintain a garden bed to grow fruit and vegetables, learning basic skills in installing reticulation and using sustainable and recycled materials. Produce will then be harvested and used in Healthy Cooking workshops at the Broome PCYC and initiatives with community partners such as Fresh Peddlers.

The program is supported by Broome PCYC staff and community volunteers who will assist in the delivery of the project. The program encourages participants to develop decision making skills, promotes self-accountability for the community they live in and encourages practices of sustainable living through healthy lifestyle choices.

Broome PCYC Centre Manager, Annie Dann, said the Community Garden is a great initiative to engage local young people.

“For disengaged youth particularly, gardening can lead to greater social adjustment, improved self-reliance and more positive attitudes” she concluded.
