Getting girls outdoors at Exmouth PCYC

The Exmouth PCYC Girls Outdoor Recreation Engagement Program, increasing the engagement and physical activity of local youth, has been made possible with a State Government Grant.

Exmouth PCYC received $10,000 through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and Healthway to provide active recreational opportunities once a week to girls aged between 12-17 years.

The 20-week program runs Wednesday afternoons, where up to 12 young girls currently engage in activities such as exercise sessions and activities such as yoga, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and mountain biking. Sessions also include educational workshops from local community partners, such as the SES and WA Police, to teach life skills such as team building, leadership and volunteering.

The program teaches participants the benefits of physical activity, health and nutrition in an outdoor environment created to engage and promote participation rather than competition, which is an effective way to engage with girls of this age group.

Exmouth PCYC Centre Manager, Lauren Rampling, said the funding was welcomed to increase participation and engagement in sport and active recreation, particularly among low participation groups.

“The program aims to promote healthy lifestyles, and provide opportunities for young girls to get involved in activities and workshops. It also focuses on building resilience and self-esteem through positive relationships developed within the community and with their peers” she concluded.
