Senior Youth Worker

For many reasons, some young people need alternative learning options to traditional school. Without effective alternatives, the future for many young people is uncertain, leading to a cycle of disadvantage. That’s why at the WA Police and Community Youth Centre, we operate our Registered Training Organisation, the PCYC Institute of Training (IOT) – we offer young people the opportunity to complete a course in an engaging training environment, setting a solid foundation for ongoing training, education or employment to ensure young people reach their full potential.

About the Role:
The Senior Youth Worker will work collaboratively with PCYC staff, stakeholders, families and young people to facilitate all aspects associated with service delivery. Responsibilities include:
  • Delivering strong youth work support for at-risk and vulnerable young people who have disengaged from mainstream education
  • Fostering positive professional relationships with young people and their families
  • Providing support and interventions for young people experiencing multiple barriers to education
  • Supporting course delivery and facilitating programs and activities that meet the needs of young people;
  • Developing transition plans; and
  • Providing a safe and welcoming environment.
About you:
  • A tertiary qualification in Youth/Community work (Cert IV or above is highly desirable) or related area such as social work, psychology, behavioural science and/or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with youth at risk, particularly in an educational setting with an ability to communicate with them and their families effectively.
  • Previous experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander young people and have a good understanding of the issues facing First Nations people
  • Ability to plan and apply appropriate behaviour management strategies,
  • Ability to work with young people experiencing a wide range of issues including but not limited to AOD, behavioural, mental health and assist in identifying appropriate referral pathways.
  • Sound understanding of youth work code of ethics
  • Strong written and administration skills
  • Possess or willing to obtain National Police Clearance issued within the 6-month period and WA Working with Children Check
  • Drivers Licence is essential, an LR license would be highly desirable
