Broome PCYC Leadership program kicking goals

Published: March 19, 2019 12:00am
The Broome PCYC Leadership program has hit the ground running for 2019 and has been busy getting involved and promoting the good work they are doing to the Broome community. On Sunday 17 February 2019, the Leadership students got a taste of customer service through doing one of the Bunnings Sausage Sizzles. The students really took charge of this opportunity and enjoyed every moment of it, not needing very much assistance from the trainers at all. The students got to see some of their old teachers as well as community members they have worked with in the past, they took pride in promoting the achievements they have accomplished so far in life and were congratulated for their efforts which put a smile on their faces. Broome PCYC's Leadership students have also incorporated educational life skills sessions that will also offer support and guidance into their career paths and lives in the future. The students currently have Fred Murphy from the Dept. of Communities and his dedicated team from the Family and Domestic Violence Unit come in on a weekly basis to deliver sessions on anger management, domestic and family violence, as well as Fred giving the young people advice and insight to his life experiences he has had in the past. Fred is a great role model for our community and is a great example of what can be achieved when you get the right help and support needed. Weekly sessions with Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Services, Family Support program has just started that targets issues around supporting all aspects of Aboriginal families. The students attended their first session in February where the session was aimed at looking at all aspects of Home Care. The students really enjoyed this session as it got them thinking about what they call a home and gave them guidance on what their home will look like in the future and what they need to do to achieve this. They also took up an opportunity to take on a project for Foundation Housing which will see them plan and produce community garden beds for the Foundation Housing residents. The Leadership students have also teamed up with Clifton from headspace with some cooking classes, showing them some recipes and knowledge in the kitchen.
