Fremantle Police and Community Youth Centre (PCYC) held a Special Training afternoon to launch their new All Stars Boxing Program for young people on Thursday, 7 February 2019. The All Stars Boxing Program, delivered in partnership with WA Police through ‘Special Plate’ funding, engages young people from the ages of 12 to 17 in the Fremantle and surrounding communities to gather and practice boxing in a safe, supervised environment on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the Weights Gym at Fremantle PCYC. Interested? Register to the program here today. The former World Kick Boxing Champion and Indigenous Boxer, Chris Collard ‘The Warrior’, who attended as a special guest trainer to kick off the Boxing Program at Fremantle PCYC, said his boxing career had started at PCYC. “I came from humble beginnings, I got into a lot of fights and got beaten up a lot when I was younger I got sick of not being able to defend myself,” he said. “Boxing steered me in the right direction in life, it gave me so many positive outlooks.” Mr Collard said boxing taught children respect, self-discipline and how to interact with other people. “It gives them a feel about the commitment and the dedication you have to put in to do whatever you want to do in life to reap the benefits,” he said. “The PCYC helps you and nurtures you in the direction to which you want to go in, lots of police officers come down here with their time, it’s a great community.” WAPOL Youth Crime Intervention Officers (YCIOs) Derrick Herbert and Rob Huntington work closely with the team at the Fremantle PCYC, in a partnership, that makes a great contribution to children and young people attending the Centre. The Boxing Program allows young people to feel empowered and enjoy boxing sessions with fellow participants aimed at building self-confidence and reinforcing positive life skills. The number of kids registered on the Program is set to grow, and including establishment of a Girls Boxing Program and Boxercise classes to follow as well.
