Kensington PCYC Youth Give Back to Community

Students from Kensington PCYC's Goals4Life Certificate I in Leadership course recently completed their Community Project with the Town of Victoria Park which involved working together to paint over numerous graffiti tags in public areas. The Community Project, which took 20 hours to complete, is a major component of the Goals4Life Leadership course, encouraging students work as a team to enhance their own skills whilst giving back. The project was even given the name ‘Operation Coverup’ which came after a group brainstorming session in class. Their hours of hard work certainly paid off, leading to a discussion with Curtin University’s Place Activation Coordinator, Jane Mitchell, who extended an invitation to students to visit the campus and work on a mural of their own. The students were lead around the campus to see some of the other amazing murals on the grounds for inspiration before setting to work on their own mural with a helping hand from Urban Artist Drew Straker, who they had worked closely with on the Bayswater 500m mega mural earlier in the year. The impressive finished piece features the PCYC initials displayed boldly in bright, colourful lettering. Kensington PCYC centre manager, Amanda Dow commented that the project was such a success; she has students already asking when they can do it again. “This was a new project for Kensington to complete and we are extremely proud of all our students who were extremely professional and dedicated to the completion of this project. We are also very thankful for the support of Town of Victoria Park, Curtin University and Mr Drew Straker from Mastermind Murals.” “We also want to give a shout out to Annette Pitts, Mathew Owens and Peter van der Lecq from the Town of Victoria Park, along with Sean Daly Head of Safer Communities as well for their assistance and time with our students in the Centre.” If you’d like to learn more about the Kensington PCYC Goals4Life Certificate I in Leadership Program, get in touch today on (08) 9367 1282, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit their Facebook page.
