Success for Popular Carnarvon PCYC Full Throttle Program

Published: January 18, 2018 12:00am
The popular Carnarvon PCYC Full Throttle program has finished after a very successful year in 2017. The program focuses on the restoration of old, damaged bicycles, engaging young people in a safe environment Youth were encouraged to complete two bicycles each, the first which would be gifted to a member of the community in need and the second to keep for themselves as not all participants had a bicycle and obtaining one for use was very difficult. Donating bicycles to this cause has meant that many youth now have access to the bicycles to improve their health and fitness. The Carnarvon Community College was selected to take part in the program with approximately 15 students chosen to participate. The college expressed great satisfaction with the program and were pleased with the number of youth who participated as well as the effect the program had on increasing student attendance during the days the program was offered. In conjunction with the school, the Carnarvon PCYC chose to donate 3 bicycles to youth who would benefit from using them in the community including Carnarvon Physiotherapy, who recently commenced a healthy lifestyle program for youth. The program involves increasing the levels of physical activity of youth through participation in activities such as riding bicycles, canoeing, walking etc. All participants are referred from the schools in town, many of who have health issues that can be alleviated if not cured through the prescription of exercise. Staff from Carnarvon PCYC and Carnarvon Community College agreed that this has been a very worthy program, one which will continue to positively influence many members of the community.
