Arcade-game inspiration

Published: July 30, 2020 12:00am

The latest addition to Kalgoorlie PCYC proves that both the safeSPACE and Pathways to Employment programs are innovative alternatives to traditional learning.

Once disengaged from school, Shannon from Kalgoorlie PCYC found inspiration first from the safeSPACE program, and then from a Pathways to Employment course through Training Group Australia.

The program works with small groups of teenagers who might benefit from an alternative approach to learning. That was certainly the case for Shannon, who was tasked with designing and building an arcade machine as part of the Certificate II in Construction pathway.

Shannon, working with a team from Training Alliance, designed, built and decorated an arcade game from scratch. Once finished, Shannon was given the choice of keeping the arcade game as a reward for her high attendance at the program. Instead, she chose to donate it to PCYC for all the young people to enjoy.

Now loaded with all the classics, from Donkey Kong to Space Invaders and Street Fighter, the arcade game is a sought-after activity at Kalgoorlie PCYC!
