Basketball bouncing into Carnarvon

Basketball WA will soon be offering programs to the local kids of Carnarvon, thanks to $20,000 of funding from the State Government, and partnerships with PCYC and community organisations such as the Stephen Michael Foundation.

A working group will devise a basketball program that will reach younger children through the Aussie Hoops program, and older kids through Night Hoops and 3 on 3 games.

The basketball programs will be delivered at Carnarvon PCYC – the only indoor facility in the local community that delivers a wide variety of recreational activities. The centre also provides diversionary programs to ensure children and young people are engaged all year round.

Like many other centres in the north-west, the majority of Carnarvon PCYC programs and activities are provided free of charge to ensure all children and young people have the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and activities to find and follow their own passions.

PCYC Centre Manager Bree Maher said: “I’m delighted we’re able to come together as a community to deliver these programs for children and young people.”

Announcing the initiative, the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Hon Mick Murray, said the project will stimulate participation in basketball and create long-term opportunities.

He added: “The State Government has committed $1.05 million towards redeveloping PCYC's new premises at the Carnarvon Community Recreation Centre. I'm pleased to be able to now help the Carnarvon Basketball Program get going.”

Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn said: “Having great sports and recreation programs can make a huge impact on a young person's life. We never know who will be the next champion Australian basketballer – maybe a young kid from Carnarvon!"
