Korben sets sail on an adventure of a lifetime
16-year-old Korben set sail on an adventure of a lifetime on the Leeuwin Ocean Voyage thanks to Woodside and the team at Fremantle PCYC.
The Youth Explorer Voyage is a week-long voyage where young people aged 14-25 get to run a working ship, including setting and furling the sails, climbing masts, working aloft and being on standing watch while sailing through the night.
After receiving a sponsorship from Woodside that covered 75% of his voyage fare, Korben still needed to raise another $580 to participate.
The team at Fremantle PCYC were determined to close the gap and did all it took to raise the remaining fees. Luckily, after a successful cake stall and community car wash Korben raised more than required and used the extra money to purchase clothing and other products for his trip.
Fremantle Centre Manager, Justine Marmion said they were delighted to help Korben, who volunteers at the PCYC safeSPACE program.
“We have seen Korben overcome many life challenges and are so excited for him to have this opportunity to try something new and push his boundaries”, she said.
Korben said “I’m so excited to join the voyage and learn what it takes to sail a ship like this. I’m so grateful for everyone that made the trip possible for me.”
