Another win for Geraldton PCYC boxing club

Published: August 08, 2019 12:00am

Geraldton PCYC Boxing Coach Faycal ‘Mehdi’ Mechiche triumphantly returned from the Boxing WA Silver and Golden Gloves Championships in Perth last weekend, crowned winner of the 69kg Silver Gloves Senior category.

Mr Mechiche beat three boxers in his division to take out the top spot, after only his third fight in the ring for Geraldton PCYC.

WA PCYC is well-known for producing accomplished boxers, and Geraldton is leading the way with their first trophy after only registering with Boxing WA earlier this year.

Geraldton PCYC Centre Manager, Talya Quinn, said she is grateful for the State Government Department of Local Government, Sporting and Cultural Industries (DLGSCI) funding that got the Club off the ground, and the way the local community has worked together to make the Club such a success.

“Geraldton PCYC Boxing Club is a great example of the local community working together to make better opportunities for local kids”, she said.

Skybox Studio Boxing Coaches Teegan and Adrian Webb helped corner Faycal during the fight, as well as running regular sparring sessions with the PCYC Club.

Ms Quinn has high hopes for the Boxing Club, with a Coach that the kids can look up to and more rising stars in the gym. 12-year-old PCYC junior boxer Frauke Rawling also participated in the Silver Gloves Exhibition Match displaying great determination and potential for future match-ups.

Geraldton PCYC welcomes young people from any background and ability to join the Club. “Boxing improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle condition and builds confidence”, said Ms Quinn.
