Budding ballers dazzle at Broome Basketball Carnival

Published: December 21, 2023 4:41pm

Broome PCYC had the pleasure of supporting a whopping 60 children from Broome and surrounding communities in the West Kimberley, to compete in the Broome Junior Basketball Carnival last month.

Teams were supported by the Shire of Broome, Broome Youth, Families Hub, Alive Kicking Goals and Together We Ride. This partnership made it possible to remove cost barriers that prevent young people from being involved in community sports.

The 6 teams included:

  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 12 mixed
  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 14 girls
  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 14 boys
  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 16 boys
  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 18 boys
  • West Kimberly Ballers Under 18 girls

The two-day competition, held at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre, saw 25 teams travel from far and wide across the Kimberley region to bring the pressure.

In preparation for the competition, weekly training sessions started in Term 3 at Broome PCYC. With the help of WAPOL Community Liaison Officer, Monica Lee, Taj and Chrissy from Broome Youth and Families Hub, plus coaches from Alive and Kicking Goals, the budding basketballers honed their skills and gained the confidence to compete in the prestigious community competition.

Special thanks to Broome Youth and Families Hub for organising the new uniforms which were a highlight for the young people involved. The PCYC ballers displayed exceptional behaviour and felt proud sporting their new uniforms.

Congratulations to all of the participants, with special mention to the West Kimberley Ballers Under 14 boys who impressibly reached the semi-finals. We also applaud Mia Wiggan for her outstanding achievement as the Runner-up MVP in her age category.

Thank you to all of the collaborators for making this dream a reality for Broome PCYC’s young people. We look forward to the Broome Junior Basketball Carnival next!
