Community sharing reveals a new world for Kalgoorlie kids

Published: March 23, 2021 3:32pm

Every Thursday afternoon, the youngest participants at Kalgoorlie PCYC aged between 6 and 10 years now visit the Sandalwood Family Centre where they can use a fancy dress wardrobe, two playgrounds and a host of other facilities they wouldn’t normally have access to. They have immense fun in fancy dress masquerading as their favourite fantasy characters.

The presence of the Youth Policing Officers has added additional inspiration as the kids compete to see who can get hold of the mini police uniform in the fancy dress cupboard and pretend to be a police officer for the afternoon.

This generous offer from a local community organisation has opened up a whole new and exciting world for PCYC Kalgoorlie kids.

PCYC continues to attract a growing number of young children whose ages range from primary school through to their teens.

“It was a challenge to fit them all in and to provide activities for the different age groups,” says PCYC Kalgoorlie Centre Manager Julie Beeson. “So, when the Sandalwood Family Centre offered to make their centre available, we didn’t hesitate.”

Sandalwood Family Centre manger Ursula Andinach said the centre had operated solely for childcare until recently deciding to branch out into greater community engagement including hosting community events.

“Working with PCYC to share what we have with the children from PCYC has been a great opportunity for us to utilise what we have for the benefit of a greater number of children and young people in our community,” she said.

“This is a fantastic partnership with the Sandalwood Family Centre and we’re really grateful to them for sharing their wonderful facility and equipment,” said Julie.
