Connecting kids to sport at Roebourne PCYC
The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) provides $10,000 grant for the Roebourne PCYC CONNECT Kids Pilot Program.
The project aims to connect kids in the Pilbara region, who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to participate in, to sporting clubs by reducing the financial barrier.
Roebourne PCYC CONNECT Kids Pilot Program will assist 60 young people, aged 5 – 18 years, working within the community to engage young people into local sporting clubs. This includes assisting youth with registration and paying their membership fees on their behalf, for sports such as Football, Basketball Rugby and Hockey.
Through successful relationships, Roebourne PCYC will also build on its capacity to provide access to equipment, facilities and volunteers to deliver programs or mentor students.
Acting Roebourne PCYC Centre Manager Jackson Joseph said the benefit the program has on young people, goes further than the collective goal to increase youth participation rates in community sport and recreational involvement in the City of Karratha.
“For the kids in Roebourne to participate in sports, it helps develop valuable life skills such as numeracy and literacy, and builds resilience through mentorship’ he concluded.
