Geraldton PCYC boxing club packs a punch
Geraldton PCYC Boxing Club is now Boxing WA registered, has accredited coaches and is now participating in in competitive boxing events. The expansion of the club is all thanks to funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), as part of the Targeted Participation Program.
Since receiving the funding to support the Geraldton PCYC in its aim to increase youth participation in boxing, with the hope of juniors and adults competing, the Boxing Club has continued to grow. It continues to welcome youth at risk from any background to participate in boxing free of charge and encourages young people to engage with coaches on a mentor level.
In a recent charity event, Geraldton PCYC Centre Manager Talya Quinn, competed in what was ‘one of the most entertaining fights of the night’. Although coming off second best, it was an amazing event for the local community with Geraldton PCYC youth attending for free. The event also raised over $10,000 for local not-for-profit organisation ALTAS - who supports people with disabilities.
“It was such an honour to be involved in the event, and being able to bring Geraldton PCYC youth along we really made a night out of it” she said.
Geraldton PCYC Boxing Club also recently attended its first Boxing WA event in over 5 years, in Perth.
Coaches Faycal Mechiche and Justin Crudeli represented the club, and although not winning their matches, are very proud to be at the level now to compete in WA.
The future for Geraldton PCYC Boxing club is very exciting.
