Geraldton’s song-writers nurtured

Published: August 25, 2019 12:00am

Musical talent is being nurtured at Geraldton PCYC, as part of the Midwest Music Development program. Young people aged 12-25 took part in introductory song-writing sessions that focused on situational awareness and encouraged creative development and artistic originality.

The program is delivered by music-industry professionals and mentors, who work to identify, nurture and showcase new local music talent.

Each session provides a topical forum to generate discussion and ideas towards the creation and completion of at least one set of original song lyrics. Sessions also focus on developing participants’ skills in teamwork, leadership, cooperation, with the aim of increasing levels of literacy, self-confidence, creativity and self-worth.

The program is funded by Dancing Brolgas Music and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and is supported by a number of partners such as West Australian Music (WAM), the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) and the City of Greater Geraldton.

Centre manager Talya Quinn said it was an exciting opportunity to partner with a number of organisations in order to provide a youth development program that was a bit different to traditional programs.

“We are excited to work with organisational and community partners, Aboriginal elders and industry professionals who can capture and share a wealth of music industry experience and knowledge to develop our local youth,” she said.

The program also introduces participants to further development or employment opportunities within the music industry.

Participants with identified music talent will be selected to progress to stage two of the program, which is dedicated to musicians and vocalists who are ready to perform.
