Keeping the lights on in Roebourne

Published: May 20, 2020 12:00am

In a typical week, over one hundred children and young people in Roebourne participate in PCYC recreational activities, thanks to the ‘Lights On’ project funded by the City of Karratha.

The ‘Lights On’ project lights up the local basketball court every night of the week and the local football oval on Friday nights.

The funding provides a well-lit area for young people to participate in a range of free play activities and structured junior football and basketball programs.

Each school term the local Youth Policing Officers are challenged by keen Roebourne youngsters in a ‘Kids vs Police’ basketball game on the courts.

Vishal Sharma, Roebourne PCYC Manager, said the project is vital to the children and young people in Roebourne as it provides a safe place where young people can have fun with their friends.

“The facilities are constantly in use, seven days a week. There are always kids there – whether it’s 14 degrees or 41 degrees, day or night. We’re grateful for the lights being on when the children need it most,” said Vishal.
