PCYC is coming to Kununurra

Published: September 18, 2019 12:00am

Following the announcement of the $2m State Government funding for a PCYC location in Kununurra earlier this year, we are delighted to have appointed Jane Cartwright as new Centre Manager to drive the launch and running of the Centre.

Jane brings extensive experience having managed the NSW PCYC Albury Centre for six years. Her commitment to empowering disadvantaged youth drove a shift change in indigenous engagement at the Albury Centre, and Jane is equally excited to work with the community to develop programs that are right for the children and young people in Kununurra and the East Kimberley region. “I was inspired by the opportunity to be involved in the lives of so many children and young people. The new Kununurra PCYC will mean that young people will have opportunities to participate in recreational activities and personal development programs that they’ve never had access to before”, said Ms Cartwright.

WA PCYC is currently working with the Shire to finalise a location for the Centre. An administrative office will be established, and programs will be delivered leveraging off existing community facilities and bringing together a range of community stakeholders, including local Aboriginal Corporations, to co-design and deliver the programs.

The Western Australia Police Force has committed an additional two Youth Police Officers (YPO’s) to support the existing two YPO’s in Kununurra. Thanks to strong support from the WA PCYC Patron, and WA Commissioner of Police, Chris Dawson, young people at every WA PCYC get to connect with their local Youth Police Officers and form a bond with them as people that they look up to, chat with and see regularly.

The official opening of the Centre is planned for December 2019, but PCYC will be giving local kids a taste of what’s to come with a pop-up Fun Truck in the October School holidays.

WA PCYC CEO, David van Ooran, said, “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm from the community for the new PCYC Centre and look forward to working together and generating positive outcomes for the people of Kununurra”.
