Keen Kalgoorlie Gymnasts join safeSPACE™ Squad!

Published: March 01, 2024 3:32pm

Nine enthusiastic young people in Kalgoorlie are now proud members of the inaugural Kalgoorlie safeSPACE™ Gymnastics Squad!

SafeSPACE™ is PCYC’s core program for vulnerable children and young people at risk. The program is committed to offering young people a home away from home where they can enjoy a range of unique opportunities in a safe environment.

Thanks to a generous grant from Aurizon, doors were opened for eight safeSPACE™ girls to join the squad after showing a keen interest in trying gymnastics.

Another eager Gymnast was added to the team thanks to the National Indigenous Australians Agency’s (NIAA) critical safeSPACE™ funding. The funding also provides transportation for all participants, ensuring they are safely picked up from school and dropped home following the sessions.

Donning their brand-new leotards and shorts, the young gymnasts engage in weekly training sessions under the expert guidance of a Gymnastics WA-accredited coach.

The classes are already proving to be a huge success for the budding Gymnasts, many of whom are naturally talented at the sport. Working closely with their coach, the team have been revising their skills and learning the fundamentals of gymnastics in a safe, nurturing environment.

The feedback from the group has been overwhelmingly positive, with all participants showing commitment to the sessions and immense gratitude for the opportunity to get involved in gymnastics.

One participant who had been counting down the days until she was able to start training expressed, “This is like a dream come true”.

The program will run throughout Terms 1 and 2, with a goal to continue further and support the girls’ journey into PCYC’s Regional Gymnastics competition.

We extend our deepest appreciation to Aurizon and NIAA for making the young girls' dreams a reality!
