Kalgoorlie PCYC grant backs gym aid for local youth
Kalgoorlie PCYC will deliver a new gymnastics program for disadvantaged and disengaged youth, made possible through a State Government grant.
The Kalgoorlie Youth Gymnastics Club has receives $10,000 to start the program, which is part of the Kalgoorlie PCYC safeSPACE initiative
The Kalgoorlie PCYC safeSPACE program, delivered Wednesday – Friday afternoons, provides local youth with a safe place to hang out and engage in recreational activities and diversionary programs, as an alternative to participating in antisocial behaviour. Participants are transported from school and provided with a healthy meal while they are there.
Many of the young people attending the programs have a high degree of talent for gymnastics, however they are unable to afford the fees and insurances required to participate in existing programs.
The grant will allow these young people the opportunity to join the Kalgoorlie Youth Gymnastics Club, participating in classes, engaging with other gymnasts while building skills to compete in future competitions.
Kalgoorlie PCYC Centre Manager Shannon was pleased to have been awarded the funding, which would go towards fees and insurance for the 10 to 15 kids involved, and help them get into the mainstream gymnastics program.
“The youth participating in the program will not only also build strength and physical fitness, but they will develop self-esteem through belonging to an established sports club” she concluded.
The State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and Healthway is a major supporter of Kalgoorlie Youth Gymnastics Club.
